On Wednesday, April 22, the winners of the 21st annual BBC Music Magazine Awards were announced at a ceremony held at Kings Place in London. Young Czech pianist Jan Schulmeister received the Newcomer of the Year award, beating out American violinist Simone Porter and British pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason with his album featuring works by Mussorgsky, Scriabin, and Rachmaninoff! The ceremony also featured a live performance by Jan Schulmeister, who gave a captivating rendition of Scriabin’s Etude in C-sharp minor.

A total of 27 albums released last year by major record labels from around the world were nominated. The nominations were divided into nine main categories (Orchestral, Concerto, Opera, Choral, Vocal, Chamber, Instrumental, Premiere, and Newcomer) and represent the best of the recordings reviewed in BBC Music Magazine over the past year. The BBC Music Magazine Awards are the only classical music recording awards in which the main categories are voted for by the public. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the winners in two special categories (Personality of the Year and Recording of the Year).

Jan Schulmeister commented on receiving this prestigious award: “To be honored in this way is something I could hardly have imagined, and I accept it with sincere gratitude and humility. My deep thanks go to all the listeners who took the time to vote for me. I am also very grateful to everyone who was involved in creating this album – especially the recording director and sound engineer, and Supraphon label for the unique opportunity to release this album and for their trust and support. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to my teachers and parents.”

Jan Schulmeister’s Supraphon solo debut, featuring Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, 5 Preludes and Etude in C-sharp minor by Alexander Scriabin, and Six Moments Musicaux by Sergei Rachmaninoff, was released in August 2025 and received very positive reviews from international critics. Supraphon is planning another recording project with Jan Schulmeister for 2027.
